Five-star hotels are highly desirable — cush beds, top-notch service, extra amenities — but are rarely affordable. The average nightly rate for a five-star hotel on Hipmunk in 2018 was $431. But as savvy travelers know, the secret to luxury travel for less is finding those lower cost destinations, or visiting popular places in the shoulder or off season.
To find a few luxury options at more reasonable rates, Hipmunk dug into their data to determine what U.S. destinations have five-star resorts for three-star rates. Since it’s still winter, we’ve highlighted warm, vacation destinations where you can sit back, cocktail in hand, and defrost.
